    Artists Statute

    What's the Artist's Statute?

The Artist's Statute is the legal framework that the group of artists has been demanding for years in order to have a regulation adapted to the conditions of our professional group. A new rule that should help the professionalization of visual artists.

The Statute of the Artist is a claim that comes from afar, since the seventies, specifically, when the pillars of the current rule were laid in terms of administrative rights and duties. As we know, a democratic society is characterized by the participation of different sectors of society in the collective construction of norms and frameworks that help in coexistence in common. In this sense, the group of artists has traditionally been forgotten, and the specific conditions of the sector have not been taken into account, such as temporality or the specificity of the type of work and professional dedication.

For these reasons, we believe that a regulatory framework is necessary to help guide a fairer professionalization in line with the reality of the group. In this sense, we work together with the UNION of Contemporary Artists to urge administrations and the Government of Spain in the effective implementation of a Statute in this same legislature, which is the administration that has the powers.

We have also supported CONCA by contributing ideas to the debate on proposals that it launched in 2020 and encouraging all artists to fill out the census, an essential tool that can provide very valuable information for the drafting of the Artist Statute.

In these years of reflection and generation of surveys, drafts and evaluations, there have been two proposals from artists that we also want to point out, since they open spaces and possibilities for another way of understanding a law for the artist. This is the case of the Ley del Arte by Isidoro Valcárcel Medina and the adapted legal documents proposed by Núria Güell for her Caravana-Natura. Actions that show us that we must flee from pre-established frameworks if we really want to advance in ways that are not only possible, but also desirable for the collective.
